Settings that keep a Discord GIF small
A free Discord account can attach files up to 10 MB; Nitro raises that ceiling. Start with Balanced— 480px wide at 15 fps looks good in a chat window and stays well under 10 MB. If it's still too big, trim a second or two more before you touch anything else: length costs more than width or frame rate. After that, Smaller drops you to 240px and 10 fps. The finished size appears next to the download button every time, so you never have to guess.
Making a GIF into a Discord emoji
A custom emoji is a much tighter target than a chat message: it has to be under 256 KB, which is roughly one fortieth of the 10 MB you get in chat. Keep the clip to a second or two, use Smaller, and set the shape to Square — Discord scales the image down to emoji size, so fine detail is lost anyway and a bold, simple movement reads far better. Animated emoji slots need Nitro on the server; the 256 KB limit applies either way.
